When wastewater is pumped through a pipe, it is best to keep the pipe level with no high or low points. It is also possible to design the pipe to rise up along its length so that the high point is at the discharge end. In that way, any air or gases will be able to escape at the discharge end.

Low points in wastewater pipes are normally avoided unless a drain valve is installed to allow the removal of the water for the maintenance of the pipeline.

High points in wastewater pipes are also to be avoided because air or gases can collect there. An air pocket can interfere with flow.

Air release valves are available to automatically release air at high points in the pipeline. This valve includes a float that closes the valve after the air escapes. This prevents any sewage from being released.
