Wastewater Treatment
Articles Index
Some communities face the prospect of providing sewage treatment for a population that may double over a 15-year period. That is, the initial design population will be reached after five years. Then the population will increase by 50% in the next five years and will increase by an equal amount in the following five years.
Sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) provide a reasonable means of serving such a growing population. For instance, two fully equipped treatment tanks and one holding tank can be built initially. In five years, the holding tank can be converted to a fully equipped treatment tank. In ten years, a fourth fully equipped treatment tank can be constructed. The rectangular treatment tanks can be constructed next to each other.
In using this design, 64% of the total construction cost will spent initially. In subsequent phases, 21% of the total construction cost will be spent in 5 years and the remaining 15% will be spent in 10 years. This is based on a 3% annual inflation rate.
