Thinner liquid sewage sludge flows like water. However, as the solids content of the sludge increases, it becomes increasingly more difficult to pump. This is true even though the "thicker" sludge may still appear to be water-like in nature. Therefore, a significant safety factor needs to be added to the pressure losses calculated for water.

Some sludge pumps deliver the flow in a pulsating flow pattern. That is, the instantaneous flow rate varies from zero to four times the average flow. The maximum instantaneous flow rate must be considered when figuring the design pressure of the pump.
