A sludge cake pump is an effective and tidy means of transporting dewatered sewage sludge cake. A typical pump is hydraulically driven and consists of two reciprocating pistons that alternately move slowly through 3-foot long cylinders. The pistons push the sludge through a closed pipe. The sludge is completely contained inside the pipe. Operating personnel are not exposed to the sludge along the route of transport. The sludge flows out the end of the pipe like toothpaste coming out of the tube. The pump is similar to one used to pump concrete in the construction of high-rise buildings.
